Reviews used to be about reputation. Going into 2027, they're also what search and AI tools read when they decide who to recommend and how to describe you. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and AI assistants quote reviews when they answer "is this place any good?" The good news: getting more reviews and replying to them is mostly a habit, and AI can take most of the effort out of the replies.
Why reviews matter more in 2027
Google uses them. Google's own guide to local ranking says it looks at relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.
AI assistants can use them. Reviews may inform answers about restaurants, gyms and fitness studios. Yelp has announced an integration that brings its reviews, ratings, photos and business details into ChatGPT.
Customers still read them, and they can read your replies. A calm, specific response to criticism shows that you listen.
How to get more reviews, within the rules
Asking is fine on Google. What isn't fine is paying for reviews, faking them, or only asking the people you think will be happy.
Do:
- Ask every customer, not just the happy ones. A card at the till, a line on the receipt, a QR code on the table or in the changing room, or a short follow-up email after a visit.
- Make it easy. Use the "Ask for reviews" link from your Google Business Profile so people land straight on the review form.
- Ask consistently after a visit or class, without selecting only customers who seem happy or pressuring them to review you on the premises.
Don't:
- Offer incentives for Google reviews. Google bans payment, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for any review, not just a positive one. Separately, the US FTC rule prohibits incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment and fake reviews, including fabricated AI-written experiences.
- Write reviews yourself, or ask staff, friends or family to. Undisclosed insider reviews are also covered by the FTC rule.
- Filter who you ask. "Happy? Leave a review. Not happy? Tell us privately" is known as review gating, and Google's policies don't allow it.
- Ask for Yelp reviews. Yelp's own rules discourage businesses from asking customers for reviews. Focus your asking on Google, and let Yelp reviews come on their own.
In the UK, consumer protection rules prohibit fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews. Do not commission fake experiences or hide incentives. Google's platform rules are stricter: do not offer anything in exchange for a Google review. See the CMA's guidance for businesses.
How to reply to every review
The rule of thumb: reply to everything, within a week, in your own voice.
- Good reviews: thank them for something specific they mentioned. Two or three sentences is plenty.
- Mixed reviews: thank them, pick up the main point, say what you're doing about it.
- Bad reviews: stay calm, own what went wrong without excuses, and take it offline with a contact email. Never argue, and never share the customer's details.
You don't have to write every reply from scratch. Our guide Reply to reviews with AI has two prompts you can copy: one for a single review and one for a whole week's batch. You teach the AI your style once, then edit each reply and post it yourself. A week of reviews takes a few minutes.
Set up a weekly review routine
- Turn on alerts in your Google Business Profile, Yelp and Tripadvisor, so new reviews reach you the same day.
- Pick one time a week, say Monday morning, to reply to everything new.
- Batch the replies with AI, then edit each one and add one real detail.
- Note anything that keeps coming up. If three reviews mention slow service on Saturdays, that's not a reply problem.
- Check your average and count once a month. Steady growth matters more than a perfect score.
What to do about fake or unfair reviews
If a review appears to break the platform's rules, report it through the platform's own process. A negative opinion is not automatically a policy violation. If you reply, stay factual and calm and do not disclose personal details. Removal is not guaranteed.
Questions people ask
Can I ask customers for Google reviews?
Yes. Ask for genuine experiences consistently, use your review link, and do not offer incentives, pressure customers or select only happy customers.
Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?
Not on Google: its policy bans incentives for any review. Separately, the US FTC rule prohibits incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment. Always follow the platform's rules as well as the law.
Should I reply to every review?
Yes, good and bad, ideally within a week. Google says helpful replies help your business stand out.
Is it OK to use AI to reply to reviews?
Yes, as long as you edit each reply, add a real detail and post it yourself. Using AI to write reviews of your own business is not OK.
Do reviews affect how AI assistants describe my business?
They can. Reviews may be among the sources used in an answer, and Yelp has announced an integration that brings its reviews and business information into ChatGPT. This does not guarantee a recommendation.
